Get to Know the Heart Behind It All
As a West Virginia native, Christianne grew up in a small town outside of Charleston, West Virginia, and opted to attend school where her mother worked as a teacher in the low-income, rural community of Lefthand. There, she encountered the harsh realities of poverty, including a lack of healthcare resources and the personal struggles of those around her. Christianne empathized with and connected to families in the area, as her own family faced financial challenges. Experiencing many similar experiences throughout her life, in the hollows and hills of West Virginia, cultivated her Appalachian values of simplicity, compassion, genuineness, kindness, and the ability to be nonjudgmental. Christianne learned from the strength and resiliency of mountain people and felt called by a passion to serve others by helping to give back to rural communities like the one in which she was raised.
Christianne decided to pursue a career in psychology to provide assessment and counseling services to individuals from underserved, isolated regions. After completing undergraduate and graduate studies in West Virginia, Christianne traveled to another rural, low-income community in Athens, Georgia, to earn her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia. Christianne has built a career as a licensed counseling psychologist, focusing on trauma, addiction, and assessment, with close to 10 years of experience, all in underserved communities across Appalachia. Today, she’s dedicated to making a meaningful difference in underprivileged communities, guided by the Appalachian values that have shaped her from the start.
As a rural-identifying individual, Christianne is not only passionate about her role as a clinician but also engages in advocacy for reducing health disparities in rural and economically disadvantaged areas at both the state and national levels. In West Virginia, Christianne has served as the Diversity Chair for the West Virginia Psychological Association for the last two years. She is also the sole psychologist involved in programming and advocacy for the West Virginia Rural Health Association. Christianne engages in national research to improve training for mental health professionals in rural and low socioeconomic spaces, and recently, she was elected to the Committee on Rural Health within the American Psychological Association (APA). Christianne's efforts have allowed her to advocate for rural mental healthcare, which predominantly affects West Virginia, by protecting and improving access to healthcare coverage nationwide.
Christianne remains committed to making systemic and long-lasting changes to influence education, policy, and practice. She hopes to improve the health and well-being of rural communities as a whole so that individuals can grow into their authentic selves and live happier, more fulfilling lives.
